Discovery The Town of Tehachapi

Come Back to a Simpler Place in Time...

Tehachapi, known for its apple orchards, is a unique mountain community with an abundance of wide open spaces and good old country neighborliness. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing to do in this beautiful corner of the world.

The elevation of the Tehachapi Valley is approximately 4000 feet, with the surrounding mountains reaching almost 8000 feet. Tehachapi is known as the Land of Four Seasons, Springtime is filled with apple blossoms and wildflowers, summer is sunny and mild, autumn's colors are red and gold against crisp blue skies, and winter's light snows complete the wonderful variety that mountain living provides.

There has been much debate for many years about the origin and meaning of the name, Tehachapi. Some historians believe that it was derived from an Indian word meaning 'sweet water and many acorns'. Others contend that it meant 'windy place'. In spite of this rather monumental uncertainty, Tehachapi grew into a business center for ranchers and miners in the area when the railroad came through the pass in the 1870s. Trains are still a vital part of the Tehachapi landscape as they make their way from the farmlands of the San Joaquin Valley, through the apple orchards of the Tehachapi Valley, to the deserts of the Antelope Valley and beyond.
